Fat Envelope Frenzy - eBook Edition

I grew up in a solidly middle class family. I honestly did not know that NOT going to college was an option. On the other hand, it never occurred to me (or my parents) to apply to an Ivy League college — too expensive and way to Eastern.

Even so, I have always had this secret fascination with the idea of Harvard or Yale — kind of like a sociological study in how the other half lives. Fat Envelope Frenzy gave me a whole new perspective on education in the 21st century and the Ivy League.

Joie Jager-Hyman followed five high school seniors in their quest for admission to Harvard. These kids are remarkable (and a little intimidating). All but one of them has achieved more in their short lives than most of us will achieve over the course our fifty years. And believe it or not, the “under achiever” is something of a relief in this line up of super achievers:

  • Felix, the child of Chinese-American doctors who grew up in Philadelphia. He achieved perfect scores on all seven of his Advanced Placement tests, has toured internationally , and edits and online science magazine.
  • Nabil, son of a Memphis gas-station attendant, is a math wiz who takes multivariable calculus at the University of Memphis, just for fun.
  • Andrew , a New Orleans native who survived Hurricane Katrina is a tennis-playing class valedictorian and does charitable work at his church.
  • Lisa, is an internationally ranked gymnast who is weighing college against the Olympics. She got a B-plus once — in Driver’s Ed.
  • Marlene, the daughter of impoverished Dominican immigrants. She is the “underachiever” with excellent test scores but a less than perfect school attendance record.

Jager-Hyman does a good job of making each one of the characters vibrant and real. I got very involved in their ups and downs and couldn’t help but routing for them.

She could have been less “academic” about the process — there were lots of detours through her experience. She also has lot of ideas and opinions about the admissions process.

If you are interested in applying to the Ivy League or have a child who wants to apply this is arguably valuable information. For the rest of us — just skim over those and follow the storyline.

The most profound sentence in the whole books is near the end: “Past experience suggests that the particular college a student attends is far less important than what the student does to develop his or her strengths and talents over the next four years.”

This is a great “bedtime book”; you can read a little every night for several weeks and not lose the storyline. Fat Envelope Frenzy is recommended reading for anyone applying to college or who has a child looking at college options

Here is the Harper Collins synopsis:

A former Ivy League admissions officer, Joie Jager-Hyman follows five bright and eager high schoolers-students from diverse ethnic, social, and financial backgrounds-as they each put their best foot forward on the road they hope will lead them to the hallowed halls of Harvard University.

At once a remarkable true story of dedication, achievement, and heartbreak and a guide for success in an ultra-competitive environment, this important work deserves a place in the home of every family that has ever dreamed of receiving that coveted “fat envelope” in the mail. Jager-Hyman also offers a startlingly frank appraisal of the college admission process and the important roles race and class continue to play in a student’s efforts to attend the best school possible.

Catch & Release When Trout Fishing

Trout fishing spans the gamut from sneaking up on a brook trout in a little stream to trolling hundreds of feet down for monster lake trout. But there are similarities in all trout fishing including trout generally like colder water and trout are instinctual feeders. Where a bass might take a duckling off the surface of a pond, trout feed on whatever there is the most of at that particular time. There are exceptions to this rule but by and large it holds true.

Every trout fisherman knows that the best way to catch a trout is a night crawler on a hook but unfortunately more and more streams particularly world-class streams are going to artificial lures only and a majority of quality water is going to flyfishing only. In streams where population of trout is below par, the water is often ruled catch and release. Catch and release rubs some trout fishermen the wrong way. It goes against the fond memories they have of years ago of coming home proudly with a stringer of fish. Then they’re where ten times the miles of public streams and one-tenth the number of licensed fishermen. Dams and home building have steady eroded the length and breath of trout streams. As Lee Wulff says “a game fish is too valuable only to be caught once”. I personally practice a modified catch and release. Last year I landed 21 steelhead and I kept two. Those two had put up such a struggle that I firmly believed they would not survive release.

I want to talk specifically about the lures one uses when fishing with spinner bait. Nearly all spinner bait is meant to imitate a minnow, most a wounded minnow. These are effective but in different ways with different species of trout. With rainbow trout spinner bait that looks like a healthy minnow is more effective than a wounded minnow. Size is important to a smaller lure will be more effective than a larger one. As I said before rainbows feed on what there is most of, generally eating a lot of small meals rather than one big juicy one. A second they have the instinct to strike if something is getting away from them. That is why a small Mepps or a small spoon will work well in rainbow habitats. A larger minnow particularly one that looks wounded is much better for brown trout that are voracious eaters of minnows, the larger the better within reason. A 3 to 4-inch Rapala is a good choice brought back at a slower speed than the Mepps. I not saying you won’t catch a rainbow with the Rapala, because I have, but you increased your chances doing as I suggested.

As for fly-fishermen, most know, having spent a lot of money on dry flies, to match the hatch, but many fly-fishermen fish to big a fly thinking that the trout will want this larger meal. This goes against the instinct of a trout that, as I have said before eats what there is the most of. So if the caddis hatch is size 20, fish a size 20 Caddis. You will get more strikes than a size 18. If you have a problem of distinguishing your fly in a massive caddis hatch, fish one with a parachute. Nymph fishing is the same. As you go into the stream turn over a rock in the stream bed and look at the size, color and types of the nymphs crawling around except for black stone nymphs their small size will surprise you. Given that valuable information match your nymph with the ones you have seen. You will get subtle stikes but a lot of them because the trout are wait in the feeding areas hardly moving sucking in the nymphs as they float down to them.

Trout fishing is most successful when you let nature work for you. If you think like the fish you will increase your strikes. And if you believe in catch and release, don’t play the fish out. During the fight they build up lactic acid in their muscles that can lead to their ultimate demise. Get their head above water as soon as possible and they will reel in much easier.

How To Rig Powerbait

For those of you new to trout fishing, you mat need you know how to rig Powerbait? After reading this article you will understand the best way to rig Powerbait to help you catch more fish. The first thing to understand is what I mean by the term “Powerbait”. When I refer to the word Powerbait, I’m referring specifically to any synthetic bait that is purchased in a little jar. There are many manufactures who produce these kinds of baits, and the choice of which to use is up to you. All that’s really important is that your bait floats.

The fact that your bait (whichever brand you use) floats is of the utmost importance to your rig. Powerbait is best employed while still fishing in lakes, or water with very little current. And the fact that your bait floats, means that your offering will be floating above any underwater debris that could cause you problems. When choosing your Powerbait, just make sure that it floats, and you’ll be good to go.

The terminal tackle that’s needed to rig Powerbait properly is pretty simple. All you’ll need are small egg sinkers (1/4 to ½ an ounce), small barrel swivels (size 10 or 12), and pre tied gang hooks (size 8 or 10). Your gang hooks don’t have to be pre-tied, you can tie them as needed, it’s just that doing this is a pain in the butt. And your Powerbait itself, which again, is your choice.

Begin by grabbing the end of your line and slipping on one of your egg sinkers. The amount of weight will vary, depending on conditions such as wind and depth of the water. Now tie on one of your small barrel swivel. Your swivel will act as a “stopper” for the sinker and prevent line twist. Now tie on your pre-tied gang hooks. At this point add enough Powerbait to each hook to completely cover said hook. Now your rig is ready.

Simply cast this Powerbait rig into the water and allow it time to sink to the bottom. Now set your rod against some sort of immovable object (like a forked stick, rock, or tree). At this point, slowly reel in any slack line, until your line is completely taught. Now it’s time to wait. If you’re fishing in waters that have been stocked with trout, it shouldn’t be long. When your rod tip bounces, you have a bite.

My normal rule of thumb is to wait a half an hour to forty five minutes and if I get no bites, reel in, check the Powerbait and re-cast. The bottom line is that this Powerbait rig is extremely effective. Doesn’t it make sense that offering twice as much bait would be twice as effective? Well it most certainly is.

Another great tip is to make sure that you’re fishing when the trout are the most active. This is accomplished by understanding a little about the weather and moon. These two forces have an amazing impac6t on the behavior of fish, and using this information to your advantage pays huge dividends. Start using the weather and moon to your advantage and you will become a more successful angler, it’s as simple as that.

Now that you know how to rig Powerbait, get out there and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Fly Fishing - An Introduction

Over the last 2000 years humans have employed numerous methods of archery, fishing and hunting in order to find food. Over that time, fly fishing has become seen by many anglers as the essential method of fishing requiring skill, patience and stealth. Indeed trout fishing is by far the most rewarding fishing whether boat fishing or bank fishing.

When compared to other forms of fishing and the fishing equipment required at the bank, fly fishing stands out above the rest due to the limited fishing equipment that is needed; allowing greater stretches of a river or lake to be explored in a session. By employing what is essentially a fishing lure presented in such a way as to convince the fish it is a living creature worth devouring encompasses all that relates to the history of archery, fishing and hunting.

Which Rod?

There are several things that you need to think about when choosing the right type of fly fishing. Every reel and fly fishing rod has a certain function and knowing the function is critical to its success.

One of the first things that you need to consider is comfort. Is the rod that you’re using comfortable for you to hold? If you’re shorter than about 5′5″ you won’t want to use a rod that is seven feet. Choose a fly fishing rod length that is easy for you to hold and cast for a few hours at a time.

Most of the fly fishing rods on the market today are designed to allow you to feel when a fish takes the bait. The shaft of the fly fishing rod is called a “blank” and when the rod is first manufactured the blank is made from fiberglass, graphite, or other materials. Each of these blanks has an action that is either: light, medium, medium/heavy, or heavy. The upper portion will also have an action that is either: extra light, light, or regular. Both ends of the blank are assembled and the final result is a fishing rod, complete with a handle and guide. No matter what type of rod that you’re using, the “action” of the rod will refer to the “blank”. The action of the rod will have a great deal to do with the type of fishing that you’re doing.

Now go to your local tackle shop and ask to try out a range of rods in order to decide which best suits yourself. This will be an individual thing and the only way is to try the rods bearing in mind.

Which Reel?

Reels - There are three main types of reels that you can choose from when it comes to fly fishing: (1) baitcasting reels, (2) spinning reels, and (3) spincast reels. The reel that you choose will depend your own personal preferences.

Baitcasting reels: Baitcasting reels have better accuracy and control of the lure than other reels. They are better equipped to handle lines that are ten or more pounds in weight. The one thing to be aware of when using a baitcasting reel is that they often have the tendency to snarl or fight back when the spool starts to spin faster than the line that is being played out. This is particularly true if you are casting into the wind.

To prevent these backlashes, baitcasting reels have a magnetic braking feature but you’ll want to count more on the control of the spool tension, which is a knob that is usually located right beside the handles. You’ll need to set the spool tension knob for each lure by holding the rod straight and disengaging the spool. Loosen the tension just until the lure begins to drop down and then tighten the spool just a bit.

When you’re casting the reel you’ll disengage the spool and then hold it tight with your thumb. When you want the lure to move forward you’ll simply loosen up on the pressure. After some practice you’ll learn to control the speed of the spool so that you have better accuracy.

Spinning reels: Spinning reels are reels that have a spool that is stationary. The line is spun onto the spool as a device called a “bail” rotates around it. Spinning reels can be used for any size of line but more experienced fly fishers will use it for lightweight lures with a weight less than ten pounds. Spinning reels tend to perform a little better than baitcasting reels when you’re casting into the wind. One disadvantage of using a spinning reel is that there is the inevitable twisting of the line which will create tangles and knots. When your line becomes twisted the best thing that you can do is replace the line with a new one. One way that you can prevent some of these tangles from occurring is by using washing up liquid on the line.

To cast the spinning reel, hold the handle of the rod with one hand, making sure that the spinning reel is on the bottom side with your middle finger placed in front of the “foot” of the reel. Slowly open up the bail and pull the line behind the first knuckle of your index finger. Release the line by pulling your index finger into a straight position. You can control how far you cast the line by letting the line move along your index finger as close to the spool as possible as the line unwinds. When you want to stop the line you simply push your finger against the lip of the spool.

Spincast reels: Spincast reels are also known as “push button” reels. They are closed-face and are very easy to use. They are almost impossible to tangle and can be cast in smooth, long arcs without twisting. The main portion of the spool is encased in a covering and it remains in one place while a pick-up pin spins around the spool. When buying a spincast reel make sure that you don’t buy the most inexpensive one since you want to pay for good quality. Many beginner fly fishers do well with a spincast reel.

To cast the spincast reel all you need to do is depress the push button and hold it down. You’ll release the button when you want your lure to move in a forward position. Most spincast reels are able to be used with any weight lure or line size.

Take Your Kids Fishing

What better way to spend time with your kids is there than to take your kids fishing. You have hours of meaningful time to talk and answer questions without the interruptions of everyday life. These times together will not only be memorable to your kids but the talks you have with them will help shape their lives for years to come.

Fishing is also an opportunity to teach our kids about nature and our dependency on it. How they can keep it clean and safe for others and the consequences if they don’t. The future of our resources is in the hands of our children. If taught early on in life they are more likely to become informed stewards of our natural resources.

Fishing is an outdoor sport. It will get them away from the television and the play station. It will provide hours of what I consider healthy activity without being overly strenuous. Fishing will stimulate them to learn more about fishing and about the other things in nature they will see as they will be exposed to a large variety of plant and animal life they will never understand sitting in front of a TV.

Kids never forget the first fish they catch and who they caught it with. The reasons are simple. Kids will never forget the feeling of pure joy that comes from accomplishing something and being with someone who cares enough to spend time with them and share in their joy. When they do catch their first fish make a big deal out of it no matter what size it is. Take pictures and show them to all your family and friends in your child’s presence and they will be hooked on fishing for life.

Here are some tips to help make your first fishing experience together a good one.

-I don’t recommend using a boat unless you are willing to return to dock 30 minutes into your trip. Kids do not have a long attention span.

-I prefer to take my kids to a pond but lakes and rivers can be just as good. Look for open areas where your kids will have plenty of room to play in without disturbing others while you fix the hooks, snags, or whatever other damage they may have done to the tackle.

-Take them to a place with a high likely hood for success. Kids don’t care about the size. They need action to keep them interested. Bluegills and other sunfish are a good target.

-Provide the kids with simple tackle. Make sure you have them prepared and ready to fish before you leave for your fishing trip. Keep the tackle simple. A bobber, a split shot and hook with a worm on it work very well.

-Have realistic expectations when taking young kids fishing. Know that they have very short attention spans and may not want to stay as long as you do. Try exploring the area your at for a little while if they get bored and then try fishing some more. If they are still bored it is time to go home.

Doing Your MLM Online? Here’s a Crash Course on SEO!

If you’ve decided to run you MLM online, then it is imperative that you learn some basics about SEO, otherwise known as search engine optimization.

What is SEO exactly?

I like this definition found in Starting an Online Business by Greg Holden. It says, “SEO is a set of practices designed to improve your site’s placement in search results and is a cost-effective form of advertising that any Web site owner can tackle. SEO gives you a measure of control over the quality of your placement in search results…” (p. 289, 5th Edition)

In other words, you want to take the best steps you can to get your site listed as high as possible on the search engines.

But what are these steps or practices?

First of all, you need to think like a person who has just logged onto the Internet in search of something. Most likely they will do a search in Google and type in what they are looking for. People who are looking for information about MLM’s might type in “MLM” or “MLM Help” or “How to be a Network Marketer”. All of these quoted phrases are what the search engines call keywords.

Keywords are crucial to SEO. You want your site to be peppered with these keywords so that the search engine will see your site as a viable source of help to those who are looking for it. For example, make sure the main heading of your site contains the keywords you want people to find you with.

A second step that is important for good SEO is to secure a domain name that includes an important keyword as well. Every time someone clicks on your domain name, they are linking to you. Search engines like this and it’s also a great benefit to you because people will most likely remember you better.

Running a successful MLM business online is definitely doable. SEO is just one of the many areas that must be learned, but having a good marketing system can help get you over any humps you may need to jump over.

All the Best! To Your Success!

How to Create an Information Product Funnel Online

There is no doubt that launching your own product funnel is one of the best things that you can do in order to ensure that you’ll secure great sales potential. This tool will help you attract more customers while you retain the old ones.

Here’s how you can energize your product funnel creation:

1. Establish your expertise on your chosen niche. Before you even develop your products, you need to position yourself as someone who is knowledgeable on your chosen industry. Why? The reason for this is very simple; online users will not do business with you unless they know that you are good on what you do. Of course, these people would like to get an assurance that they will get their money’s worth. Share a slice of your knowledge by distributing quality information through Webinars, blogging, forum posting, and article marketing. Ensure that your content-base marketing solutions will help you project a positive image so you can easily convince your potential clients to do business with you.

2. Develop several products. Once you have gained a steady following, you can ask these people what kinds of products that they would like you to sell. It’s also a great idea if you can figure out their pressing issues that you can address by creating new products. Ensure that you fill you funnel with low-end, middle-end, and high-end products that will meet the varying needs of your customer base.

3. Advertise your products. Visit relevant forums that are frequented by your potential clients and let them know about your offerings. Ensure that you highlight the features and benefits of your products to make them more enticing to the eyes of your target market. You may also advertise them on your website and blogs. It is also highly recommended that you use other marketing tools like PPC advertising, search engine marketing, etc. to easily promote product awareness online.

4. Move your customers to the first level of your funnel. To get things started, convince your customers to take advantage of your low-end products. These should be the most inexpensive of all your offerings. Remember, people will generally not spend thousands of dollars on their first purchase as they are most likely to test the waters first. Ensure that you create a great impression on this part and make your customers happy so you can easily convince them to come back for more.

Intermediate Tips to Make Money with Internet and Online Business

Are you searching for the best internet business that can give you the most profit? It’s not going to be that hard anymore, compared to some few years ago. It’s because new business ideas come up every day. Indeed, the Internet is basically like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Before you reach to full conclusion, though, that this is what you want, there are a number of things that you need to keep in mind. These are very essential as competition is really tough once you’re online.

Here are some intermediate tips to make money with Internet and online business:

1. Build blogs. Blogs can be one great source of passive income. One of the best ways to do that is to add advertisements in their pages. You can settle for Google Adsense, where you will earn every time a visitor clicks on your ad. You can also earn a living by simply making product reviews. You can join Payperblog or Reviewme.

2. Write an ebook. If you are a prolific writer, you can build your own ebook. It doesn’t have to be really long. Even a 15-page book is already enough. What’s important is that you are able to convey your message to your readers. And if you want to earn some more with ebook writing, you can sell some of your space to other online business marketers.

3. Sell your articles. You can skip the website and don’t rely on an ebook. What you may do is to sell your articles to sites such as RentaGhost Writer. It basically functions like an article directory, only that you have an option to sell your articles to readers at your most desired price. Not only you will earn instant cash, you may even find a great working relationship with a client, who can give you steady work.
